Science!

An exhibit featuring 342 of the latest science books for children from some of the best publishers in the United States will be on display at Salt Lake-Moanalua Public Library from Tuesday, January 31 through Friday, March 9.

The books on display will be arranged in 17 subject categories from Animals, Earth Sciences and Marine Life to Technology/Engineering.  The reading level of the books range from pre-school through high school although the preschool through middle school levels are more fully represented.  All of the books in the exhibit can be checked out with a valid Hawaii State Public Library System card.

An annotated bibliography, which reviews and rates the titles, will be available at the exhibit or at any branch of the Hawaii State Public Library System while supplies last.  Salt Lake-Moanalua Public Library is located at 3225 Salt Lake Boulevard, across the street from Salt Lake Shopping Center.  For more information, please call the Library at 831-6831.

  • Native Voices: A reading and lecture series – A literary reading curated by Brandy Nālani McDougall & Craig Santos Perez.  This event will feature the following: Flora Aurima Devatine, Caroline Sinavaiana, Michael Puleloa, Lauren Mālialani Cabaniss, Leilani Johnson-Hagmoc, Joleen Togawa Salas.  Halau o Haumea, Kamakakūokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, University of Hawai’i Mānoa campus; 4:00 P.M.  Source.

  • First Saturday Sale – Friends of the Library of Hawaii – First Saturday Sale in Kakaako! Bill’s Bookmobile has over 2500 everyday books for sale as low as $1! All proceeds go to support Hawaii’s 50 public libraries.  February specials include $1 Romance, $1 Health, Travel, Poetry, Cookbooks, Gardening, Hobbies, Children’s Books, and Music.  690 Pohukaina St. (downtown Kakaako); 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M.  For more info, click here.
  • Joe Pipik’s Backpack Puppets: “The Rainbow Show” – This event is a zany variety show that features hand and rod puppets in an assortment of hilarious sketches. Paddy Hobart is accompanied by his dog Tuxedo, his cat Silky, and a mischievous monkey named Jogi as they take the audience on a fun-filled journey looking for the colors of a rainbow.  Pipik will present his one-man stage/theatre performance featuring animal characters and stories.   • Children’s Storytime – Come to the book store every Saturday for a fun keiki story time reading.  This week they will be reading You Will Be My Friend!
     by Peter Brown about a ballet-loving bear Lucy who wants to find a new buddy. She wants to know why finding a friend is such a difficult task. Come and find out if Lucy will find a new friend?  Barnes & Noble Ala Moana Center; 11:00 A.M.  For more information, click here.
  • Poetry Writing Workshop – (Big Island) Don’t miss the opportunity to receive one on one coaching from Spoken Word Poet, Sharon Marie Olson. Learn the history of poetry slam, review footage and discuss award winning poets and learn fundamentals of constructing a performance piece that suits your comfort level. Attendees are asked to bring two original poems of their own construction, writing materials, and an item or photo of special meaning.   • Tales of Humpbacks: The Latest Research Discoveries and a Journey to Save Them – (MAUI) Whale researcher, author, activist and founder/President of Pacific Whale Foundation, Greg Kaufman offers a multimedia presentation titled “Tales of Humpbacks: The Latest Research Discoveries and a Journey to Save Them”. This presentation is free and open to the public. A book signing of Kaufman’s 2009 book, Humpbacks of Hawaii: The Long Journey Back, takes place after the presentation.  Wailea Beach Marriott Resort and Spa (3700 Wailea Alanui, Wailea); 6:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M.  (No host cocktails at 6:00 pm.   • Illustrated Lecture on Aviation History – The Chamber would like to invite you to our next illustrated historical lecture featuring fellow historic committee members and long time North Shore residents  Vera Williams and Rick Rogers.  Author Vera Williams will present an illustrated talk on her extraordinary book, “WASPs, Women Airforce Service Pilots of World War II,” recently republished by the Pacific Historic Parks in 2011.  Aviator, historian and author Rick Rogers will showcase the fascinating history of aviation on the North Shore in his illustrated presentation.  Tickets are $10 pre-sale and $12 at the door (includes light refreshments).  Pre-sale tix available at Kai Ku Hale, Strong Current, and the Chamber office Monday to Friday, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.  Historic Haleiwa Gym across from Haleiwa Post Office ; 7:00 P.M.  For more information, contact 637-4558 or visit www.gonorthshore.org.

  • ALOHA SHORTS Free Live Taping – Aloha Shorts opens the Year of the Water Dragon with a live taping themed LIQUID WORDS – OCEAN, SEA, AND STREAM.  Among the featured selections in the February program is a short story by John Clark, “Over the Falls” which will be read by local actor Aito Simpson Steele.  Another reading from Lee Cataluna’s collection FOLKS YOU MEET IN LONGS, “Kahuna Dave,” will be performed by Krisha Fairchild, with accompanying “dolphin calls” and steel guitar provided respectively by HPR sound engineer Jason Taglianetti and Charley Myers of Hamajang.  A full list of literary works and the performers can be read here.  Free event.  HPR’s Atherton Studio (738 Kaheka St # 101); 6:45 P.M.  Tapings are often filled to capacity and those interested in being a part of the studio audience are advised to call the station in advance (during business hours) to reserve their seats: (808) 955-8821.
