  • That's NOT What Grandpas Are For by Jenniffer WelliverChildren’s Literature Hawaii’s Annual Used Book Sale – Second and last day of this used book sale which will help support the 17th Biennial Conference on Literature and Hawaii’s Children. Everything at the sale is priced between $0.25 to $5, including mint condition Bess Press books.   • Jenniffer Welliver book signing – Welliver, the author of children’s books such as “That’s NOT What Grandmas Are For” and “That’s NOT What Grandpas Are For” and the book “Sip and Nibble: How I lost 120 Pounds,” will be attending the Kihei 4th Friday Town Party where you can talk with the author, have her sign books, and more. Azeka Mauka (South Kihei Rd.); 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.   • Think Green treeRecycled Reads Booksale – Choose from a variety of used books, CDs, and DVDs at bargain prices.  Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Friends of Manoa Library and the Library.   • E-Book Class from Worth Grade Media – Worth Grace will prepare authors who are ready to expand their work onto digital platforms such as the Kindle and Nook with two different classes. Part I, Ebooks for Beginners (10am-1pm). Part II, PR for Authors & Ebooks (2pm-5pm​). It’s $50/workshop or $75 for both. Space is limited.   • Children’s Storytime – Join the book store for a special Storytime as they will be reading Sofia the First by Catherine Hapka: Sofia is a very little girl that lives a very ordinary life but her mom marries the king!   • Ben Moffat - Stories on Stilts and Other Tall TalesStories on Stilts and Other Tall Tales w/ Ben Moffatt – Storyteller Ben Moffat will present a storytelling experience using stilts, masks, movement and puppetry. Moffat will spin stories from Europe, Asia, and the Americas including “The Barking Mouse,” “The Crane Wife,” How Roller Skates Were Invented,” and “The Giant in the Tiny House.” Hawaii State Library-Edna Allyn Room for Children (478 S King St.); 11:30 A.M. For more information, please phone: 586-3510.
  • Rakugo Bento – The dynamic group Bento Rakugo, led by artistic director Yasu Ishida, performs “Rakugo Bento” in the traditional Rakugo (Japanese translation: “fallen words”) storytelling style and adds a modern twist to the Japanese comedy. In Rakugo, the performer presents a comic story while sitting on a Japanese cushion throughout the entire performance, speaking all of the voices in both the first person and third person.   • Tongan-style leiSee Lei-making, Tongan-style – Aita Tonga, a self-taught lei maker who has been creating lei for more than 10 years, will demonstrate how she makes Tongan lei and discuss lei customs. There will be a photo display featuring various lei styles, and the audience will have the opportunity to examine fresh lei made by Tonga. This two-hour presentation is suitable for ages 5 and older. All children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.   • How to Create Your Own Monster – Comic Jam Hawaii, a local artists group on Facebook, will conduct the 2 ½-hour workshop for ages 8 and older. The workshop will cover basic considerations and inspirations for monster designs followed by a couple of monster design demonstrations.  Participants will then have time to draw their own monster creations. Paper, pencils, and crayons will be provided. Participants may also bring their own art supplies. Aiea Public Library (99-143 Moanalua Rd.); 1:00 P.M. For more information, call 483-7333.
  • PAWS for Reading, DogsPAWS for Reading – A free program for keiki in grades 1 through 5, offered every Saturday in April 2013 at the library. The programs will be conducted in the Children’s Area. The Hawaii Canines for Independence, a non-profit organization that provides people with physical disabilities specially-trained dogs to assist them in living more independent lives, will present the Reading Educational Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) program which is said to improve children’s reading and communication skills. Reading to a Therapy Dog can help build a keiki’s reading confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and is a lot of fun. Parents should contact the Library to sign up their children for 15-minute reading sessions. Pre-registration is required.
