Friday, March 15

  • Kaui Hart Hemmings readings – Hawaii author Kaui Hart Hemmings, whose book The Descendants became an Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning movie, will read from her novel at two free readings.   “The Descendants” won an Oscar this year for Best Adapted Screenplay and Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor and Best Picture/Drama. The film starred George Clooney as the head of a kamaaina family who discovers that his comatose wife was having an affair.  Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa (2552 Kalakaua Ave).  First reading is at 10:30 A.M.  The second is at 3:30 P.M.  This is the first of a series of guest artists who will talk about their work at the hotel.  Source

  • Friends of Waialua Library Book Sale – The Friends of the Waialua Public Library holds a book sale at the library every 3rd Saturday of the month! There is also a bake sale at the book sale.   • Clear Englebert feng shui book event – Feng shui expert Clear Englebert explains chi energy and how to attract and maximize its beneficial flow, stressing the importance of the approach to the home. Learn why some energy from neighboring structures is considered negative and how to deflect it. Emphasis is placed on harmonizing the home with the surrounding landform.   • How to Care for Rabbits – Zac Johnson, accompanied by some of his pet rabbits, will present this special children’s event in conjunction with the Spring Reading Program.   • Toot and Puddle Visit B&N! – Join the book store as they welcome lovable Toot and Puddle to the Forty Acre Woods. A special Saturday Storytime with very special guests.   • Feng Shui Garden Tour + Book Signing – Feng shui master, Clear Englebert is the author of a new book, Feng Shui for Hawaii Gardens [read our review here].  Come and meet Clear as he gives a Feng Shui Garden Tour of the area.  Learn why some energy from neighboring structures is considered negative and how to deflect it.   • Links to the Past book event – Meet Wendy Arbeit, the author of a new book, Links to the Past: The Work of Early Hawaiian Artists.  Ms. Arbeit will introduce her important new work and give background on why and how she researched and created this important new book, which includes over 1,400 line drawings. Come to listen, learn, get a copy signed, and talk story!  Native Books / Nā Mea Hawai‘i (Ward Warehouse); 2:00 P.M. to 3:30 P.M.  For more info click here.
  • Discussion of Alain Badiou’s “Politics of Emancipation” – This will be a salon-type discussion with a relatively short introduction and then discussion. Everyone is invited. Alain Badiou, a French philosopher, has attracted attention, and come across to many as someone rescuing communism, at a time when as the polemic puts it “Communism, and the communist project, is at a crossroads.”  Revolution Books (2626 South King Street); 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.  For more information, visit Revolution Books Honolulu online.
  • An Afternoon with poet Gary Snyder – Snyder is a pioneer in expressing aesthetic links between sustainable environments and his studies of indigenous cultures and Asian traditions.  His Turtle Island received the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1975. “Mountains and Rivers without End,” a book-length poem, won the Bollingen Prize for Poetry in 1997. Snyder received Japan’s Masaoka Shiki International Haiku Grand Prize in 2004, and in 2008, he won the Ruth Lilly Prize for achievement in poetry.  Books by Gary Snyder will be available for signing, on sale by the University of Hawai‘i Bookstore, after the reading.
