Science Books Exhibit

This is the final week to view the Salt Lake-Moanalua Public Library exhibit featuring 342 of the latest science books for children from some of the best publishers in the United States. The books on display will be arranged in 17 subject categories from Animals, Earth Sciences and Marine Life to Technology/Engineering. The reading level of the books range from pre-school through high school although the preschool through middle school levels are more fully represented. All of the books in the exhibit can be borrowed with a valid HSPLS library card. An annotated bibliography, which reviews and rates the titles, will be available at the exhibit or at any branch, while supplies last.   • Mystical Poetry Night – The Islamic Society at University of Hawaii invites everyone to this free event.  The night will consist of poetry readings from different languages, tea, ethnic snacks (samosas, falafels, halwa, and more), a performance from the local Sufi group, and lots of fun!   • Friends of the North Shore Library at Princeville Quarterly Book Sale – From 9am to 10am, the book sale will be open only to Friends of the North Shore Library at Princeville (FNSLP).  You can come early and join the Friends ($15 Individual, $25 Family, $50 Business).  After 10am the sale is Open to the Public.  $1 for most hardcovers, $0.50 for paperbacks, Hawaiiana slightly more.  Princeville Public Library (4343 Emmalani Dr.); 9:00 A.M.* to 4:00 P.M.  For more information, call 826-4310 or visit princevillelibrary.com.
  • First Saturday Sale, Friends of the Library of Hawaii – First Saturday Sale in Kakaako! Bill’s Bookmobile has over 2500 everyday books for sale as low as $1! All proceeds go to support Hawaii’s 50 public libraries. This month features $1 Mystery and $1 Religion.   • How to Make Calendar Gift Bags – Local crafter Evelyn Nakamura will teach participants how to turn old calendar pages into attractive gift bags to use for gifts, favors, or goodies. Learn a process that can be applied to any size or type of paper. In addition, Nakamura will share other ideas for using old calendars. Supplies will be provided to create up to a dozen bags. Class size is limited to 20 participants (ages 12 and older); registration is required. To register, please sign up at the Reference Desk or call the Library. Participants can bring their old calendars and tissue papers (wrinkled is okay) with them to the program.   • Special Children’s Storytime – Come to the book store every Saturday for a fun keiki story time reading.  This week they will be reading  Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes by Eric Litwin.  It’s a special storytime and craft session, so see you there!  Barnes & Noble Ala Moana Center; 11:00 A.M.  For more information, click here.
  • Hanafuda Hawaii Style – Helen Nakano will conduct this free hands-on demonstration program for adults.  Nakano will teach the basics of Hanafuda, a traditional Japanese card game which is a cherished island tradition once enjoyed in the plantation communities by children and adults of all cultures.  She will also share myths and symbolism of the card designs.  Hanafuda card packs will be available for purchase at the program.  Volunteers from the Mililani Hongwanji Buddhist Women’s Association will provide hands-on assistance for participants in this two-hour program.  Registration is not required to attend.   Mililani Public Library (95-450 Makaimoimo Street); 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.  For more information, please call the Library at 627-7470.
