2009_0315_istock_present_0Our Book Blogger Holiday Swap!

It’s the holidays and there’s so much to do! Alex and I are pretty excited about the next few weeks. We have some book give-aways scheduled as a thank you to our readers. In addition to the usual Christmas rush of activities, we’ll be reading and typing like crazy to finish our Library Tour Challenge by the end of the year!

Speaking of challenges, there is a big community of book bloggers on the internet, and although we haven’t seen any who focus on Hawaiiana, there are spectacular blogs with reviews on just about every book you can think of! We do try to interact with other book blog rings by participating in challenges, memes and swaps! The Book Blogger Holiday Swap is like a Secret Santa for book bloggers! This year we decided to sign up and a few weeks ago we were assigned our “Santee”. I can’t reveal all the details about our Secret Santee just yet but she has her own blog and enjoys reading mysteries, dramas and YA books. She likes coffee and all manner of book related items, so this is what we’re sending:

Secret SantaA 2010 Hawai’i calendar (super useful if you ask me), Holiday Kona Coffee, Hibiscus Book Mark, Sea Turtle Sticky Notes, Slipper Notepad, Honu Luggage Tag and the book,  Poisoned Palms: The Murder of Mrs. Jane Lathrop Stanford by local author Dorothea Buckingham. It’s a fictional account of the real life tragedy that takes place in turn of the century Honolulu. The book’s settings are written with great detail as if Honolulu were a secondary character in the novel. It provides an interesting backdrop to this mystery that we hope our “Santee” enjoys. Dorothea Buckingham is a local author and active member of the Aloha Chapter of Romance Writers of America.

We had such a hard time deciding what book to send. We wanted to send something that would represent local literature, but couldn’t agree on exactly which book could pull that off. In the end we decided to go for something we thought she’d enjoy even if it doesn’t represent all the facets that make local literature and Hawaiiana so special (that’s a pretty tall order for any local book to achieve).

We’re not sure who OUR Secret Blogger Santa is, but once we get our “swap” we’ll be sure to post pictures. It’s quite fun to think about the unique books and things we could get from other book bloggers around the world. We’ll definitely be doing this again next year 😉
