Friday, April 12

  • Friends of Lihue Library Book Sale – There will be oodles of books: mysteries, thrillers, romances, classics, history, biography, health, cookbooks, literature, coffee table books, Hawaii and Pacific, as well as videos, DVDs, CDs, and more. All proceeds from this fundraising event will support the programs and services of Lihue Public Library.   • Uncle Wayne and the Howling Dog Band Singalong – Come sing along with “Uncle Wayne” Watkins and the Howling Dog Band!  Musician and early-education specialist, Uncle Wayne Watkins brings his Howling Dog Band to Kihei Library for a morning of rollicking good fun.  Get ready for an energetic and entertaining sing along.  Just right for toddlers and preschoolers and their families and caregivers.  Laugh, sing, dance and move to music that inspires and entertains.   • Lisa Linn KanaeKauai Literature Festival – Kauai CC will host a panel of highly regarded Hawaii writers and authors. The panel discussion followed by a Q&A session will finish with an opportunity to talk story with all of them (refreshments will be served). Authors include: Lisa Linn Kanae, Kealoha, Juliet S.   • Poetry Readings and Musical Performance – Poetry Readings and Musical Performance. Join poets Keahi Felix and Dennis Soares in this intimate evening of poetry readings and acoustic musical performance. Keahi will be reading from her recently released book, “A Quiet Woman.” The title of the book records the perspective that she says, “soothed her soul.” Dennis Soares will be reading from his book, “Poetry for the Child Within”, a collection of short insightful poems that will foster reflection on life.   • Book Sale BagFriends of Lihue Library Book Sale – There will be oodles of books: mysteries, thrillers, romances, classics, history, biography, health, cookbooks, literature, coffee table books, Hawaii and Pacific, as well as videos, DVDs, CDs, and more. TODAY (Saturday) there will be assorted book crafts for both young and old as well as book sales and signings by many Kauai authors. Best of all will be an afternoon visit from the famous Russell the Rooster who loves books and libraries. All proceeds from this fundraising event will support the programs and services of Lihue Public Library.   • Maui Friends Used Book Sale – Please stop by and check out their selection of fiction, non-fiction and oversize books. All proceeds help support all of the libraries in Maui County.   • Friends of the Library Kona (FOLK) Book Sale – Every second Saturday, the Friends of the Library, Kona hold a book sale. F.O.L.K. Members receive 20% off Lanai Sales.  Proceeds from the sale will go to help fund Kona libraries.  The book sale will be held on the library’s lanai. To volunteer email: booksales@folkhawaii.com.   • The Friends of Pearl City Library Booksale – The Friends will be holding their spring booksales on two days this April, the 14th and 21st. Book prices range from 50¢ for small children’s books to $2.00 for adult hardcovers. DVDs begin at $3.50 (more for sets). All proceeds benefit Pearl City Public Library and its programs.   • Hawaii, A Novel by Mark PanekMark Panek Book Event (HAWAI’I) – Book event with Mark Panek, the award-winning author of Big Happiness: The Life and Death of a Modern Hawaiian Warrior and Gaijin Yokozuna: A Biography of Chad Rowan. Here he will be promoting and reading from his third book, the novel Hawai’i.   • Create Books with Recycled Material – Eco-crafter Evelyn Nakamura will demonstrate how to transform scraps of paper, cereal boxes, and wall paper into two different and impressive mini-books for little journals, cards or instant displays.  Nakamura will also share samples of other kinds of mini-books.  This program is for adults; registration is required: contact the Library to register.   • Pirates and Princesses – Children ages 3 and older will learn to “speak like a pirate,” “wave like a princess,” “walk the plank,” and more! This one-hour program will begin with keiki choosing either a pirate or princess name for themselves. Opportunities to immerse themselves in these worlds through new vocabulary, crafts, activities, and peer play will be limited only by their imaginations. Costumes are welcome but optional.   • The Magic of Alan Arita – Magician Alan Arita will perform his popular Magic Show. Arita combines comedy, astonishing magic, and audience participation to intrigue and amaze one and all.  This program is recommended for ages 3 and older.   • A Tribute to Slack Key w/ John Keawe – John Keawe, a self-taught slack-key guitarist, is a multiple Na Hoku Hanohano and Hawaii Music Awards recipient and a contributing artist on Hawaii’s first Grammy winner, “Slack Key Guitar Volume 2” (2005). Keawe will offer a tribute to the slack key style and include selections from the music of Raymond Kane, Leonard Quan, and others, in addition to presenting his original compositions. Hilo Public Library (300 Waianuenue Ave.); 2:00 P.M. For more information please call 933-8888.
  • Eric Paul ShafferCelebrate National Poetry Month, Hear Eric Paul Shaffer – In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Hawaii Center for the Book will present “Light from Everywhere,” a free program featuring Eric Paul Shaffer. Shaffer, who is a poet and novelist, will read a selection of classic and contemporary poems about finding, receiving, or seeing illumination in unusual events, people, places, and things. Shaffer, who is also an instructor at Honolulu Community College, is the author of “Lahaina Noon,” “Portable Planet,” and “Burn & Learn.” This one-hour program is suitable for ages 12 and older. The Hawaii State Library First Floor Reading Room (478 South King St.); 2:00 P.M. For more information, please call the Library’s Language, Literature & History Section at 586-3499.
  • 2nd SATurday’s Poetry Slam & Open Mic – Youth Speaks HI (as seen on HBO) presents…this month’s installment of “2nd SATurday’s Poetry Slam & Open Mic.” Hosted by Kamalei Hee & Emceed by Samson Tafolo. $3 ADMISSION (the most affordable slam in town!) Doors and sign-up at 2:30PM, starts at 3:00PM.   • PAWS for Reading, DogsPAWS for Reading – A free program for keiki in grades 1 through 5, offered every Saturday in April 2013 at the library. The programs will be conducted in the Children’s Area. The Hawaii Canines for Independence, a non-profit organization that provides people with physical disabilities specially-trained dogs to assist them in living more independent lives, will present the Reading Educational Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) program which is said to improve children’s reading and communication skills. Reading to a Therapy Dog can help build a keiki’s reading confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and is a lot of fun. Parents should contact the Library to sign up their children for 15-minute reading sessions. Pre-registration is required.   • Gentleman ED FRANCIS Presents 50th State Big Time WrestlingGentleman Ed Francis on ‘Long Story Short’ – Tune in to PBS Hawaii as Leslie Wilcox talks story with “Gentleman” Ed Francis, a legend in Hawaii’s pro wrestling world on “Long Story Short.” Gentleman Ed Francis was a household name in the 1960s and 1970s, during the heyday of 50th State Big Time Wrestling. In the interview, he recalls growing up in Chicago in the midst of the Great Depression, how wrestling facilitated his move to Hawaii and a life-threatening riot at Honolulu’s Civic Auditorium. This is the final encore airing of this episode. These stories, and more, appear in Gentleman Ed’s book, Gentleman Ed Francis Presents 50th State Big Time Wrestling. PBS Hawaii (TV); 4:00 P.M.
