Friday, April 8

  • The Friends of Ewa Beach Library Book Sale – Preview Sale for Members. Includes sale of Books, Vinyl Records, CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes. Ewa Beach School & Public Library, 2:30pm-4:00pm.

Saturday, April 9

  • Friends of the Library Kona (FOLK) Book Sale – Volunteer Sorters desperately needed please email Marie at mkober@hawaii.rr.com. All sales go to benefit Kona’s public libraries. Next sale will be on May 14th. Kailua Kona Library Lanai; 9:00am – 1:00pm.
  • Children’s Story Time – Keiki Storytime every Saturday at 10:00am. Barnes & Noble Lahaina (Maui). More info here.
  • Keiki Talk Story – Children and one of their adult ohana hear a themed story before participating in a fun activity exploring the museum’s collection each month in the historic Frame House cellar. Perfect for children 3 years and up. Mission Houses Museum; 10:00am.
  • Friends of the Ewa Library Book Sale – Book Sale includes sale of Books, Vinyl Records, CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes. Sale runs from 10:30am to 2:30pm at Ewa Beach School & Public Library.
  • Stories of Hawaii and the World! – Storyteller Dave Del Rocco will share folktales from every corner of the globe. These tales are mostly funny and explain how different cultures view aspects of their world. Program is recommended for ages 5 and older. Kailua Public Library; 10:30am.
  • Children’s Storytime at Hawaii State Library – Every Saturday at 10:30am. Call 586-3510 for more information and to check. For children ages 3 & older. Hawaii State Library’s Edna Allyn Room for Children; 10:30am.
  • The Slack Key Artistry of Jeff Peterson – Peterson, a multiple Grammy Award and Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner, is recognized as one of Hawaii’s most versatile musicians. His focus on Slack Key guitar, classical, and jazz music has allowed him to develop a unique and transcendent voice on the guitar while remaining deeply rooted in the traditions of his Hawaiian heritage. Kapolei Public Library; 10:30am.
  • Children’s Story Time – This story time reading will feature A Sick Day for Amos McGeeby Philip C. Stead. Barnes & Noble Ala Moana; 11:00am. More info here.
  • Value of Hawaii Author’s Panel and Roundtable – Distinguished panel and community discussion by authors of “Value of Hawaii: Knowing the Past, Shaping the Future”. Pupu will be provided. Moderator will be Jonathan Osorio, Professor of Hawaiian Studies. On the panel will be Tom Coffman, Davianna Pomaika‘i McGregor, Meda Chesney-Lind, Trisha Kehaulani Watson. Sunday, April 10

  • Children’s Storytime – Children preschool age and older, accompanied by a parent or caregiver, are invited to listen to stories, participate in finger plays and rhymes, and make-and-take home a small craft to help them remember the day’s stories.   • “Stories of Hawai’i and the World” told by Dave Del Rocco – Dave Del Rocco, a Hawaiian reference librarian at Punahou School, will share folktales from Hawaii and other places such as Africa, Alaska, Italy, Laos, and the Philippines. Kailua Public Library, 10:30am.
  • Gong Row Music & Dances of the Southern Philippines – The Mahalohalo Ensemble will introduce the music and rarely seen dances such as Igal (a dance with extended fingernails) and Kapagapir (a fan dance) that originate from Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago of the Southern Philippines. The music derives its lineage from traditions predating the 16th century and is related to gong row traditions in North Borneo, Malaysia and North Sulawesi, Indonesia with origins in ceremonial, ritual, and entertainment purposes. This 45-minute performance will offer audience participation to give children and adults a hands-on experience of these unique cultural traditions. Suitable for ages 5 and older. Pearl City Public Library, 1:00pm.
  • “The Art of Taiko” feat. The Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble – This unique 45-minute cultural program will feature a demonstration and lecture on the art of performing with taiko (Japanese drums). Learn about the different drums and percussion instruments of Japan as used in traditional and contemporary music. Recommended for ages 5 and older. Kaneohe Public Library, 2:30pm.

Monday, April 11

  • Shanah Trevenna Book Signing Event – UHM lecturer and PhD. candidate Shanah Trevenna will share her upcoming TED Talk based on her recently published handbook for change agents, Surfing Tsunamis Of Change. Her book sheds new light on what stifles and creates change and through engaging research and proven strategies shows how every individual, organization, business and community can ultimately learn to enjoy surfing the waves of change occurring in our world today, and in our lives every day. Library Week Events

There are a plethora of library events happening this upcoming National Library Week. From oral histories, stories of the world, and cartooning to exotic dances from around the globe, to chamber music and slack key guitar; the Hawaii State Public Libraries will be offering a ton of excellent events and learning opportunities.
