Free Books Redux…

There are quite a few awesome ways to win books from local publishers and/or local authors that you should enter before it’s too late:

Ending on January 31st:

She Blinded Me With Science…Books

An exhibit featuring more than 400 of the latest science books for children from some of the best publishers in the country is on display at Salt Lake-Moanalua Public Library from January 26 through March 9, 2011.

The books on display are arranged in 17 subject categories from Animals, Earth Sciences and Marine Life to Technology/Engineering.  The reading level of the books range from pre-school through high school, with preschool through middle school being more fully represented.  All of the books in the exhibit can be checked out with a valid Hawaii State Public Library System card.

An annotated bibliography, which reviews and rates the titles, will be available at the exhibit or at any branch of the Hawaii State Public Library System, while supplies last.

Salt Lake-Moanalua Public Library is located at 3225 Salt Lake Boulevard, across the street from Salt Lake Shopping Center.  For more information, please call the Library at 831-6831.

Friday, January 28

  • 09:00am – From 9am to 2pm, a Children’s Used Book Sale will be held at the University of Hawaii Manoa Campus, Kuykendall Courtyard (near auditorium).  Come find bargains on hundreds of titles, from infant board books to young adult novels and non-fiction!  For more information contact Andrea Bartlett, 956-4403, bartlett@hawaii.eduSource
  • 12:00pm – Come see the “The New Sense-Sational Show” at Salt Lake-Moanalua Public Library!  This show takes into consideration young children’s developmental level and puts them at the center of the production. Part performance, part participation, this new take on a popular HTY production offers plenty to see! And smell! And hear! And touch! And even to taste! This free 30-minute program is suggested for ages 3 to 5. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. For more information, contact the library at 831-6831.
  • 02:30pm – Uh oh!  Free tickets to the Pro Bowl?  The Friends of the Library of Hawaii are giving away 500 tickets to the Pro Bowl (donated by the NFL), today from 2:30pm – 5pm at the Hawaii State Library.  The tickets will be given out on a first come, first serve basis.  See more info here.
  • 07:00pm – Special Event at Barnes & Noble Ala Moana featuring the children’s book Stop Picking On Me: A First Look At Bullying.  This approachable picture book explores the difficult issue of bullying among children. It helps kids accept the normal fears and worries that accompany bullying and suggests ways to resolve this upsetting experience.  More info

Saturday, January 29

  • 11:00am – Free Feng Shui Program at Hawaii Kai Library.  Clear Englebert, the author of Feng Shui for Hawaii and a recognized feng shui expert, will speak about the different kinds of feng shui. Callies, professor of law at the University of Hawaii where he teaches land use, state and local government and real property law. Sunday, January 30

  • 01:00pm – Author Signing at Barnes & Noble Kahala Mall.  They will be welcoming authors Perle Besserman and Manfred Steger. They will be signing copies of their new book, Zen Radicals, Rebels, and Reformers.  This book contains stories of Zen “boat-rockers” and rebels that range from early 18th-century China all the way to the bustling streets of modern day America.  More event info.
  • 07:00pm – It’s Story Slam Sundays at Ong King Arts Center (182 North King Street).  Get your 5 minute personal tale together (+ 1 min. grace) on the theme for the night and come speak your truth @ Story Slam Sundays at Ong King Art Center!
