Book End

Well, another long work week is finally finished!  TGIF, right?  This week we introduced our latest contributor to Hawaii Book Blog, Dawn Sueoka.  She comes to us with a strong background in Library Science, creative writing, poetry and film.  Her inaugural post reviewed the poetry of Wayne Kaumualii Westlake.  Make sure you check it out and welcome her to HBB!  We look forward to her brilliant insight on many future posts.  Recently we took her with us on our latest Library Tour and she will be doing the write-up for that sometime in the near future.

It’s a big week for Hawaii as Father Damien, the beloved priest from Kalaupapa, will be canonized as a Saint this Sunday.  We’ll be looking at this event and how Damien’s life and work have been translated into literature.

Check it out:

It’s always great to congregate with people who share similar literary interests.  If you are a big fan of Twilight there is a local group of fans who run the web page, 808Twilighters.com, which keep fans up to date on all the related happenings, as well as promoting events in which they not only discuss Twilight but also accept donations to help Hawaii Literacy, Friends of the Library of Hawaii, Hawaii Food Bank and the Hawaii State Public Libraries.

There’s lots to do this weekend!  I recommend you check out the Talk Story Festival if you have never done so.  It’s at Ala Moana Beach Park and it’s free, so no excuses.  In addition to that, the storytellers will also be making individual appearances at various libraries this weekend.  Check out this link for more information.
