The 2013 Ka Palapala Poʻokela Awards gala is fast approaching (Friday, May 10), and to generate excitement for the event as well as educate the public on the nominees, we will continue our tradition of doing a countdown of posts, highlighting the books nominated for each awards category. Where applicable, I will link to book reviews from Hawaiʻi Book Blog.

For a complete list of all the nominees we’ve posted and for all the updated information on the event, please visit our dedicated Ka Palapala Poʻokela Awards page.

Next in our countdown is a category returning to the KPP Awards after an absence last year: Excellence in Illustrative or Photographic books. The 2011 winners of this award include Polynesia: The Mark and Carolyn Blackburn Collection of Polynesian Art by Adrienne L. Kaeppler and Akule photographs by Wayne Levin, essays by Thomas Farber and Frank Stewart.

This year, there were only two books entered into this category, which is good news for them as they will both come out as winners. The question is, which book will get Excellence and which will get Honorable Mention? We’ll find out this Friday!

Read either of these books? Give us your thoughts!
