Happy St. Patrick’s Day everybody!

Want to avoid the crowd Downtown and still get your drink on? Join us at the Fresh Café, 831 Queen St at 7:30 pm for this month’s M.I.A series featuring HBB’s very own Dawn Sueoka! We’re so excited that she’s been given the opportunity to showcase some of her poetry and work. Yay Dawn!

If you’re unfamiliar with the MIA series, it’s a monthly literary arts event that features local writers, poets and artists. We went last month and listened to a few readings from authors in the latest TinFish issue (TinFish 20). Then there were writers from the recent issue of UH Manoa’s  student run literary journal, Hawaii Review. I particularly enjoyed Monica Lee’s short story “Dass Why Hahd”… I know we’re gonna see a lot of amazing things come from her in the future.

To close out the night, the always entertaining and educational poet and writer Craig Santos Perez read to us his latest, in what I’m dubbing the “Canned Meat Collection”, about corned beef hash. I love how layered his writing is, and if you’ve never been to a poetry reading in your life, going to one that features Craig is always a good bet.

Readings are tricky things.  Just because you’re a good writer doesn’t mean you’re a good reader.  Fortunately most of the people we’ve seen in MIA have been both. Who knows, maybe we’ll hear a limerick or too, since it’s St. Patty’s Day.

Here’s to green beer!  Cheers to art and literature!
