Friday, February 10

  • Friends of the Lihue Public Library Book Sale – Oodles of books, CDs, DVDs, VHSs, kids books, teen books and adult books will be on sale. The latest best selling novels in hard and soft covers, cookbooks, travel books, philosophy and religion, history, gardening, pets, politics, health and wellness, biography; all will be available. There is even a fair amount of Hawaiian and Pacific materials.  At $2.00 for hardbacks and $1.00 for paperbacks you can’t go wrong.  All funds raised at the used book sales go to support the programs and services of the Library.   • Barbara Lynn Blake book signing – (Maui) Local author Barbara Lynn Blake will be signing her fantastic book of romantic short stories, In Love In Italy.  This collection of short stories were ones Blake wrote the first year she was in Italy. Blake spent a year traveling throughout the country — from the northern lakes to Tuscany, Veneto, Umbria to Rome and Sicily.   • Emma’s Rainy Day at Molokaʻi Keiki Expo – BeachHouse Publishing’s Jane Gillespie will be at the Molokaʻi Keiki Expo to read from one of her children’s books, Emma’s Rainy Day (illustrated by John Aardema).  It’s the story of how a creative imagination can turn a rainy day into a great adventure; read our review of the book here.  The first “300” families with “keiki” to arrive will receive a free book and gift bag!  Mitchel Pauole Center (Kaunakakai); 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.  For more information on the event, view this flyer.
  • Maui Friends of the Library Used Book Sale – Maui Friends of the Library will be having a used book sale in front of Whole Foods Market at the Maui Mall in Kahului. Please stop by and check out our selection of fiction, non-fiction and oversize books. All proceeds help support all of the libraries in Maui County.   • Friends of the Library, Kona (FOLK) Book Sale – FOLK host a book sale on the second Saturday of each month with a few exceptions.  F.O.L.K. Members receive 20% off Lanai Sales.  Proceeds from the sale will go to help fund Kona libraries.  The book sale will be held on the library’s lanai.   • “Puppet Times,” featuring puppeteer Christy Lipps Ah Sing – This is a free program that will be conducted under the Reading Tree.  Ah Sing will present favorite children’s stories in a lively puppet show with beautifully hand-crafted puppets, finger plays, and songs.   • Afternoon of Poetry w/ Schultz – Local poet and TinFish editor, Susan M.   • ALOHA SHORTS Free Live Taping – Aloha Shorts opens the Year of the Water Dragon with a live taping themed LIQUID WORDS – OCEAN, SEA, AND STREAM.  Among the featured selections in the February program is a short story by John Clark, “Over the Falls” which will be read by local actor Aito Simpson Steele.  Another reading from Lee Cataluna’s collection FOLKS YOU MEET IN LONGS, “Kahuna Dave,” will be performed by Krisha Fairchild, with accompanying “dolphin calls” and steel guitar provided respectively by HPR sound engineer Jason Taglianetti and Charley Myers of Hamajang.  A full list of literary works and the performers can be read here.  Free event.  HPR’s Atherton Studio (738 Kaheka St # 101); 6:45 P.M.  Tapings are often filled to capacity and those interested in being a part of the studio audience are advised to call the station in advance (during business hours) to reserve their seats: (808) 955-8821.
