  • The Sixteenth Biennial Conference on Literature and Hawaii’s Children – If you are interested in talking about, working with, or creating children’s literature, join this June 21-23, 2012, gathering of parents, grandparents, educators, librarians, writers, illustrators, teenagers, children, and all those who value the wonder and wisdom of children’s literature.  Chaminade University; 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.  For more information visit the  Children’s Literature Hawaii website.

  • 65th Annual Friends of the Library of Hawaii (FLH) Book Sale – THE book sale of the summer is back with over 150,000 new and used books for sale and today is the first day open to the public!  The sale is everyday for the next week.  The booksale helps support FLH which provides funding for Hawai‘i’s 50 public libraries with special programs.  In addition, a bake sale, Ailana Shave Ice, and Simply Ono Lunch Truck will be outside selling food and drink.  McKinley High School (1039 South King St.); 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M.  For more info, visit the FLH website.
  • Maui Friends of the Library Used Book Sale – The Maui Friends will be having a used book sale. Please stop by and check out their selection of fiction, non-fiction and oversize books. All proceeds help support all of the libraries in Maui County.   • Family Torn Apart: The Internment Story of the Otokichi Muin Ozaki Family Book Event – Otokichi Ozaki was a Japanese language school teacher, tanka poet, anthurium grower and also a leader in the Japanese community in Hilo. Based on letters, poetry, and radio scripts in the collection of the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai`i and translated for the first time, Family Torn Apart traces Ozaki’s incarceration at eight different camps, his family’s life in Hawai`i without him, and their decision to “voluntarily” enter Mainland detention camps in the hope of reuniting. It is a stirring story of the human spirit in difficult times and a cautionary tale for future generations. The event is free and open to the public.   • Feng Shui for Hawaii Gardens – Your garden is the first and best opportunity to create positive energy for your home. Clear Englebert, a Feng Shui expert and author, will explain chi energy and provide tips on how to attract and maximize its beneficial flow, stressing the importance of the approach to the home. He will also explain why some energy from neighboring structures is considered negative and how to deflect it. Emphasis is placed on harmonizing the home with the surrounding landform. His examples are specific to Hawaii homes, and to the landscape, climate, and culture of the Islands. He will also explain which plants to select and where to place them. Clear Englebert is the author of several Feng Shui books including “Feng Shui for Hawaii,” “Feng Shui Demystified,” and “Bedroom Feng Shui.” He has practiced and taught Feng Shui in Hawaii and California since 1995. This one-hour program is suitable for ages 12 and older.   • Pink Hamster and the Big Birthday Surprise Storytime and Craft – The book store is honored to have author Eileen Wacker for this special Storytime reading of Pink Hamster and the Big Birthday Surprise!   • Spooky Kine Investigations – Join the library as real ghost hunters from Spooky Kine Investigations, share their equipment, techniques and stories in the meeting room. Established in October of 2009 by Wayne Takabayashi, Spooky Kine Investigations, S.K.I. is a non profit ghost hunting & paranormal investigative groups whose goal it is to provide understanding of the paranormal through the application of scientific and cultural techniques. This program is open to all age groups, but maybe a little frightening to younger children. We’re hearing that a number of locations around Honolulu may be haunted–maybe even the library! Come and find out what’s really going bump in the night!   • Jazz Music Demonstration – Dean Taba, a highly-regarded studio and freelance musician, and a featured performer for the 2012 HSPLS Children’s Summer Reading Program, will present a demonstration of various jazz styles at two selected Oahu public libraries in June. Taba will also provide an overview of what musicians are doing when improvising a solo or accompaniment.  Taba has performed and recorded with a variety of local and national musicians and groups including Jake Shimabukuro, Hiroshima, Dave Koz, and the San Francisco Symphony.   • Revolution Books Fiction Book Club – Every 4th Sunday of the month at 1:00 p.m.  They’ll be reading and discussing great novels, both current and from the past.  Their first book will be “Parable of the Sower” by Octavia Butler. This is a hopeful tale set in a dystopian future (2025).  There will be iced tea and light refreshments.
